Whether you're new to the sport or an experienced shooter, Palmerston Pistol Club offers a safe, friendly, and professionally run environment for all levels. We welcome individuals who are interested in recreational or competitive pistol shooting.

Joining the Club is the first step towards obtaining a Category H Sports Shooter Permit and eventually a Category H Firearms Licence in the Northern Territory.

The Membership Process

STEP 01

Initial Enquiry and Interview

Before applying, you’ll need to attend an informal interview with our Membership Officer. Interviews are held Sundays from 10:30am to 12:00pm. This helps us explain the process, answer your questions, and ensure you're eligible.


If you’ve never held a Category H licence, we recommend participating in an Open Day Supervised Shoot (held monthly). Cost: $20, includes firearms, ammunition, and supervision.

STEP 02

Apply for Membership

To apply, you’ll need to:

Provide two written character references

Pay your membership fee (see below)

For juniors: include parent/guardian permission and birth certificate

STEP 03

Approval and Permit

Once approved by the Committee, you’ll be issued a Certificate of Club Membership, which supports your application for a Category H Sports Shooter Permit (valid for 3–6 months).

During this period, you must:

Attend a minimum of three training sessions

Participate in regular matches (at least 12 per year, 3 per quarter)

Always shoot under supervision

Training includes firearm handling, range safety, aiming, stance, breathing, and supervised live shooting.

STEP 04

Club Safety Course

With your permit in hand, you must complete a Firearms Safety and Training Certificate.

This course is assessed for competency based on

STEP 05

Apply for Your Licence

Once the Committee confirms your successful completion, you'll receive:

A Certificate of Support for your Category H Sports Shooters Licence

A Permission to Store Firearms Notice (PF492)

A Firearms Safety Training Certificate

You must meet safe storage requirements before owning your own firearm

STEP 06

Ongoing Membership and Participation

To remain a licensed shooter and club member, you must:

Maintain
capitation with a recognised peak body (e.g. Pistol Australia)

Capitation Requirement

It is a legal requirement that all members be affiliated (capitated) with a recognised shooting sport body such as Pistol Australia. Failure to maintain this can result in cancellation of your permit or licence.
