Service Matches

Service Matches

Service matches test a shooter’s accuracy, speed, and versatility across a series of dynamic scenarios. Palmerston Pistol Club hosts 3 popular service match types, each offering a distinct experience, whether you're using a revolver or semi-auto pistol, shooting from barricades, or moving through multiple distances and target styles.

25 Yard Service Match

Designed for simplicity and accessibility, the 25 Yard Service Match is ideal for those with minimal equipment: just a revolver (4" barrel) or semi-auto (5" barrel) and some ammo. No holster is required, and all ammunition is loaded by hand from the pocket.

The match involves 65 shots, fired at distances between 25 and 7 yards, from various positions including prone, kneeling, and behind barricades. This match is all about practical shooting skills, with a mix of precision and timed series across five targets.

Service Pistol

This is the most physically demanding of the service matches, involving 90 rounds fired from distances ranging from 50 to 7 yards. Shooters use holstered 9mm or .08 8932 8771 pistols or revolvers.

The match includes a mix of long-range accuracy and rapid-fire drills on multiple targets. Participants shoot from various positions and use barricades, with each stage simulating realistic service-style shooting scenarios under time pressure.

Service – Unrestricted

Using the same course of fire as the standard Service Pistol match, this version removes many of the technical restrictions.

Shooters can use a wider variety of pistols and revolvers without worrying about barrel length, grip size, or ammo power factor. There’s also no holster required, and most series start from a ready position with the firearm held at 45 degrees.

It’s a great way to enjoy the challenge of service shooting in a more flexible, accessible format.
